The paper discussed the innovation and developments of watercolor art in China and also talked about the problems it may meet. As a newcomer from western countries introducing to China, watercolor art was accepted and carried forward quickly. During the period of nationalizing the watercolor, it integrated our unique national spirit and broad traditional culture invisibly. At the same time, it also absorbed the advantages of other similar arts. After the hard-working of earlier generations over an century, Chinese watercolor begins to take shape and it also gets rid of some disadvantages, such as small style and rough draft. Just as monotonous soft music becomes magnificent symphony, Chinese watercolor has formed good situation with various painting methods and different features. Nowadays, it gets a place in international watercolor and enjoys a high international reputation.However, Chinese watercolor also has its own shortage. As to avoid them, this paper pointed at several aspects which we have to ponder over and look out while we are painting:the problem of "technical" and " art", the problem of artists’value orientation and the problem of work styles. While sailing into the vague world of watercolor, the large wheel, Chinese watercolor, will sail fast, steadily and far, if we regard adhering to the ontology spirit of watercolor as our course and consider bold innovation and diverse development as our motivation.
