In the history of literature, "superfluous man" is a unique cultural phenomenon and an everlasting topic with a strong social relevance. Onegin and Hongjian Fang, two important characters in the history of literature, though separated by a century, have the same redundancy. Both of them are conceited, exclusive, depressed and at a loss.Onegin, born in Russian upper-class society, was influenced by highly advanced liberal thought from abroad and was dissatisfied with existing domestic life. But he was unable to change his life and had to return to the original starting point in the loss and depression at last.Fang's most obvious trait of character is that "in the face of brutal competition for survival in modern society and a serious spiritual crisis, he lacked necessary reason, faith, passion and strength to fight so that he often revealed the nature of cowardice, of confusion and recklessness involuntarily. "When the extra man show back and escape in their lives, what the women around them have shown is determination and courage for the relentless pursuit of love and happiness, which shows a striking contrast with the extra man. By comparison, the redundancy of Onegin and Hongjian Fang becomes more obvious. On the one hand, Onegin practiced his own life actively in a rebellious way;on the other hand, Hongjian coped with his own life passively in a cowardly way. Although the two have different patterns of behavior, but both approach the way to tragedy.
