Consecutive interpreting is one of the major forms of interpreting activities, which is a great challenge to interpreters as it demands their bilingual transformation ability, short-term memory and the ability to perform effectively on the spot. If the interpreter wants to interpret clearly and fluently with such great challenges, he needs to master the sentence restructuring skills so as to avoid mistakes like pause and retranslation. As there are significant differences in cultures and ways of thinking concerning Chinese and Westerners, for example, Chinese is hypotaxis-prominent and English is parataxis-prominent, it is very important for interpreters to master sentence restructuring skills so as to make sure the translation complete and acceptable to those native speakers. The thesis studies the sentence restructuring skills based on the author’s practice version of President Obama’s answers to the correspondents’questions. The third part makes an analysis of the whole process of English-Chinese interpreting, including the preparation, ongoing and the summary of the activities; and the preparation is not only for the background but also for the words and expressions; then the author makes sure what the skills are. The fourth part is about the practice and application of the skills in specific interpreting activities according to the sentence patterns. The last part makes a general conclusion of the report on the practice. The paper finds that the sentence restructuring skills can effectively help the interpreter save time during the E-C consecutive interpretation as well as lighten their mental burden, which may improve the quality of interpretation and help us complete the task more successfully.
