With the development of globalization, interpretation has became an importantcommunication means in international conferences, cultural exchanges and businessnegotiations. During the whole process of interpretation, the biggest problem theinterpreters would face is how to accurately preserve the source language information intheir memory within a very limited time. The capacity of people’s short-term memory isvery small, so the amounts of information in interpretation will bring difficulties to them.So the aim of the thesis is to discuss the function of memory and the role it plays ininterpretation.This thesis first introduces human being’s memory mechanism from theperspective of cognitive psychology and linguistics. And the writer also introduces therelationship between memory and interpretation with some features of interpretation. Thewriter uses Daniel Gile’s effort model to analyze the relationship between memory andinterpretation. Then many elements which will influence memory in interpretation arealso introduced, which will lay foundation for the following proposition of strategies. Inthe end, through the above analyses, the thesis puts forward some strategies forinterpreters’daily learning to improve the memory performance and interpretationperformance and help them get good results in interpretation practice.
