This is a translation project report based on the translation of Understanding Bourdieu by Jen Webb, Tony Schirato and Geoff Danaher. The selected part contains the first31pages of the source text, including the first chapter and the first five sections of the second chapter. Understanding Bourdieu offers a comprehensive introduction to the famous contemporary French sociologist Bourdieu’s work. It is a necessary reading material for anyone studying him for the first time. The main contents of this report are divided into four parts. Part One introduces the background of the translation project, including the origin, significance and the structure. Part Two is the background of the source text (hereinafter referred to as ST), including the author introduction, main contents of the ST, and contents and features of the excerpts. The core of this report is Part Three:quality control. This part lists the difficulties that emerge in the translation of long sentences and many terminologies. Because of a lack of background knowledge and theoretical understanding, the translator met with a lot of difficulties during the translation process. And translator used some translation methods to translate and recreate under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Text Category Theory. Part Four summarizes the implications, lessons of the translation and some problems remaining to be addressed in the future.
