In the news report, the tendency of using metaphorical idioms is more and more obvious. It is easier to be accepted by readers, because the expression of metaphorical idioms is vivid and concise and the metaphorical idioms can create the infectivity that the non-symbolic language can’t. For Chinese readers, it is very important to translate the metaphorical idioms in the news report properly and accurately. The translation of metaphorical idioms in the news report is not only the simple transformation between words, but also the communication between different cultures. However, until now, there is quite limited reference about the translation of metaphorical idioms in news report. In this thesis, the author mainly uses the methods of qualitative description and example analysis and utilizes professor Hu’s the approach to translation as adaptation and selection (ATAS) to research the best translation of metaphorical idioms in the Financial Times. Based on the theory proposed in2004, translation is translator-centeredness, and it is the process of translator’s adaptation and selection. The author collects the metaphorical idioms from the Financial Times, and then compares them with the corresponding translations in the FT Chinese. In the present thesis, the author focuses on two aspects:one is the translational eco-environments that the translator should adapt to; the other one is the translator’s adaptation and selection in the translational eco-environment and strategies of translation.According to the analysis, the author concludes that the translator should improve his/her ideology of translational eco-environment continuously to adapt to the specific translational eco-environment. And the translator should also do their best to maintain the translational eco-environment and promote its sustainable development.
