In this era of information explossion, more and more new words appear in our lives, some people think this phenomenon is a revolution of language while other groups of people think that these new born words will erode our standard language. Social function of these new words and what attitude should we have toward this phenomenom are the two main issues addressed in this article. Firstly, from the perspective of language variation elaborated the theoretical basis of the emergence of new words, followed by reaserches of foreign scholars of language variation. Using the methodology of qualitative and quantitative, a series of surveys were conducted, the data clearly reflects people’s familiarity of new words and the attitude towards new words,while the respondents of the survey were devided by age,gender,and education level. After the analysis of data,the functions of new born words were discussed next, first part illustrated the causes of linguistic variation, including technology development, cultural environment, social phenomena reasons; second part is the influence of new words especially on standards language,spoken language, media terms; shows the widespread impact of new born words; third part explains the positive and negative aspects of existence of new words, from the one hand, it brings new vitality into the standard language, these words are also easier to use and more innovative, on the other hand,new words has its own disadvantages.. In the conclusion part of my thesis, describes how we should respond to new words, The emergence of these new words, we can not simply say good or bad, but rather have a comprehensive, dialectical view.Absorb the positive aspects into our standard languge while abandoned the negative characteristics, only in this way can we respond to this phenomenom correctly and enrich our language. |
