“Boy Who Never Cry” is a literary short film that made by some graduate students ofCommunication University of China and me. The story is about a young man who hassuffered sever oppression and restriction in childhood, overcomes his psychogenicdisorder and meets the bright future. Because of the considerable changes in time andspace and switches between real scene and virtual scene in this film, a large number ofdigital matt paintings have been made. I mainly take charge of post-production.Matt painting is one of the oldest special effects and plays a very important role in thehistory of film. It has been more active since the late twentieth century, an era of digitalfilm. The digital technique changes the traditional matt painting completely. The imagefidelity and lens flexibility have been improved by using digital matt painting techniques. It helps the directors to escape the limitation of reality and have an open space forimagination and creativity. Nowadays digital matt painting techniques are more or lessused in a vast majority of films and TV showsThe virtual scenes built by digital matt painting help the crew to save a lot of timeand founds and compensate the less expressive real scenes. It will not cause any damageto the environment because of the dispensability of building background. On the premiseof the high quality, it will produce unexpected artistic effects and economic benefits it.The design and production of digital matt painting in this short film may provide referenceto other similar ones.
