In the process of English language teaching, reading, as a way of language expression,plays a very important role. It’s not difficult to find in any type of English test that, thereading scores generally accounted for40%of a total score. It is actually so importantbecause based on a few article reading questions can greatly reflect whether the learnermasters the English vocabulary very well, familiars with English grammar structure,understands the background information and writing intention of the author. Howeverinfluenced by traditional teaching method, most of Chinese students are good at fill-in Englishgrammar blanks, English correction and questions of fixed matching; all of those only requirerote learning. As for English reading part, the results are just passible. Because the traditionalEnglish teaching class is still teacher oriented, teachers constantly instill all the languageknowledge to students and our students need to do is just “listening” and “writing”. Obviouslysuch teaching method can’t conform to the requirements of new national curriculum standard.If we really want to improve college students English comprehensive ability we need toprovide positive cooperation and interaction between teacher and students, between studentsand students, in order to obtain the ideal teaching effect to upgrade students’ Englishcomprehensive abilities. To meet the above teaching objectives the current English teachingmethod should be adjusted; therefore the author puts forward to the task-based languageteaching approach combining with college English teaching.The paper is based on study results of task-based language teaching both abroad and athome, to further explain the connotation and composition of task-based language teaching.The paper is designed to find out the problems and faults in current college English readingteaching; it aims to present a practicable teaching method—task-based teaching approach.The subject in this paper is chose from Fushun Occupation Technical College grade onestudents. Applied one semester English teaching to two parallel classes, one class isimplemented the traditional teaching method and the other class is taught with task-basedteaching method and the paper is trying to examine three questions through the five months’task-based teaching.1) task-based language teaching can help to achieve and improve thecollege students’ English reading ability;2) how can task-based teaching method improvecollege students’ English reading ability;3) through task-based teaching for an entiresemester, there is significant differences between the experimental class and the control class.After five months’ experiment of task-based language teaching approach, data analysiscollected from experimental tests and questionnaires and we can draw a conclusion here: task-based language teaching method is more effective to improve students’ English readingachievement and ability than traditional teaching method.The study plays a significant role in studying and researching, students’ reading abilitycan improve by task-based language teaching, and their English comprehensive ability canalso improve. The study is based on the former studies and devotes very little to thedevelopment of task-based language teaching.
