A Study On Feminist Ideology In Lin Yutang’s Version Of Six Chapters Of A Floating Life

Feminist translation theory, the combination of translation study and feminism，wasgenerated in the “Cultural Turn”. After its introduction to China, it has been studied inan extensive way. However, due to the huge discrepancy between Chinese andWestern culture this theory has changed in the application. Lin Yutang endowed mostof his literary works and translations with feminist ideology. His English version SixChapters of a Floating Life has been studied from different angles, such asdomestication and foreignization, translator’s subjectivity and translation aesthetics,etc. However, study on it from the perspective of feminist translation is rare. Thus,this thesis takes Lin Yutang’s English version Six Chapters of a Floating Life as acase study to tentatively analyze Lin’s feminist ideology manifested in the versionfrom several aspects, namely, Lin’s choice of source text, feminist translation strategy,description of female images, etc. This study demonstrates that Lin’s comparativelypeaceful Chinese feminist ideology is different from that in the west. Lin’s effort inspreading Chinese female images and promoting their statues is also manifested in theversion. Through the study on feminist ideology in Lin’s version Six Chapters of aFloating Life this thesis sets an example in the practice of feminist translation theoryin China.
