A Comparative Study Of The Two Chinese Versions Of The Sun Also Rises From The Perspective Of Feminist Translation

Since the cultural turn in the 1980s, feminism, as a significant branch of the cultural studies, has been a new angle for the translation studies. Four fields, including translation theories, translation history, translation practice and translation criticism have thus been greatly influenced by feminism. Particularly in the field of translation practice, feminist translators treat translation as a weapon against patriarchal society and stress the translating subject from the perspective of women. As a result, more scholars have begun to probe into the relationship between feminism and translation as well as to find the study necessary and useful.This thesis aims to compare the two translated texts of The Sun Also Rises from the perspectives of feminist translation. As the first novel written by Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises fully reveals the author's feminist consciousness according to the critics circle. Therefore, based on the collection and analysis of related researching materials, the author of the present thesis points out that The Sun Also Rises is worthy analyzing and researching from the perspective of feminist translation. The two translated texts, one by Zhao Jingnan and the other by Feng Tao, are compared and analyzed from the linguistic level and feminist ideology level. Such linguistic levels as use of sentence final particles, intensifiers, tag questions, and dashes are helpful to reveal Zhao's female identity. And from the feminist ideology level, it can be found that Zhao is inclined to show her admiration for new women and is better in understanding women's psychology. In addition, Zhao is likely to omit the sexual words or emotions given by men in the novel. But both of them can be objective in presenting the images of males.The result shows that both versions have their limitations in expressing the original feminist features, but Zhao's version is comparatively better than Feng's. Furthermore, some of their defects are maybe due to their social environment, social ideology and requirements from publishing houses.In conclusion, feminist translation theory plays an essential role in translation practice, which can help readers understand the issues of gender differences in the process of translating. As a researching perspective of potentials, feminist translation theory should be used in various researches and lead to more meaningful ramifications.
