A great amount of researches have been contributed either to translations of literaryand philosophical works or to distinguished translators in the late Qing Dynasty. Thepolitical and economical translations receive little attention from the researchers. Inaddition, rendering, an important feature of the translations in the late Qing Dynasty, isshort of further exploration. Zuo Zhi Chu Yan introduces western political economics andgenerates a significant influence on the society. And Zuo presents a feature of localizedrendering. However, researches on Zuo are nearly dismissed in the field of translationstudies and are largely scattered in historical or sociological writings.Hence, aimed at an intensive study of Zuo, this thesis is done to conduct adescriptive research on the localized rendering of political, economic and social thoughtsin Zuo from the perspectives of rewriting theory, to analyze the reasons, methods andpurposes of localized rendering. The research results show that influenced by the localideology, poetics and patronage, translators make use of Chinese local political, economic and social thoughts to elaborate the political economic thoughts of westernliberalism, getting Zuo to present a feature of localized rendering. Through localizedrendering, Zuo is far more acceptable to Chinese local readers. But regretfully at thesame time, it fails to convey faithfully the content of the original text. The main conclusions drawn from this research are that in the beginning ofimporting foreign knowledge through translation, translators can apply local resources, which is conductive to the success of the translations. Furthermore, in the process oftranslating, translators must have a good knowledge of the differences between thesource language and culture and the receiving language and culture. Only in this way cantranslators convey accurately the original and receive favorable response from the targetlanguage readers.
