With the development of modern tourism, tourism literature as a way for foreign tourists toknow about China is becoming more and more important. But some inappropriate tourismtranslations may mislead foreign tourists in understanding tourism literatureļ¼Œor may causemisunderstanding of the cultural connotations conveyed by places of interest and Chineseculture. In recent years, many scholars have done some researches on tourism literature, butthere are still some limitations such as theoretical methods, research scopes and researchsubjects. Because of the significance of tourism translation, this thesis will make an in-depthresearch on Qufu tourism literature translation based on functional translation theory.Functional translation theory links the translation research with language function, andshows the important role of text function in the process of translation. The purpose ofChinese-English tourism literature translation is to provide sufficient information for foreigntourists and promote the cultural communication between China and foreign countries. Then, toachieve the intended function in the target language is a key factor in translation. Tourismliterature translation is not only a code-switching of two languages but an interculturalcommunication activity. So culture factors should be valued. Besides, this thesis also comparesthe differences between Chinese and English tourism literature. It is found that quotation, flowery diction and four-character idioms are frequently used in Chinese tourism literature, while a concise and informal way is preferred by English tourism literature. Based on thedifferences of Chinese and English tourism literature, the translator should remember well thefeatures of English tourism literature in the process of translation in order to satisfy the readingneeds of foreign tourists. In order to study and solve the problems in Qufu tourism translation, the author visitedQufu and took lots of pictures about related tourism literature. These photos make this thesismore valuable and practical. Then the author analyzes the tourism literature (including touristbrochures and introductions of the scenic spots) from the perspective of functional translationtheory.Three types of errors in Qufu tourism literature translation are to be analyzed: linguistictranslation errors, pragmatic translation errors and cultural translation errors. Linguistic translation errors are mainly divided into three types: misspelling, poor diction and wordredundancy. Pragmatic translation errors include literal translation, wrong structure andnon-uniform expression. Cultural translation errors are mainly caused by the misunderstandingof different cultures. The causes of those translation errors are the lack of awareness oftranslation purposes, inadequate awareness of text functions, misunderstanding the culture andcarelessness of the translator.Based on the above analysis, the author proposes some translation methods, such astransliteration&explanation, paraphrase, addition, omission, reconstructing and recreativetranslation. These translation methods are hoped to be useful for translators to deal withdifferent problems, and then make the target readers accept the tourism literature. At the sametime, translators should improve their language competence, and take a good balance of thecultural differences between source texts and target texts in the process of translation. Thetranslator should not confine him to the content and form of the source texts. The Englishversion of tourism literature should be acceptable and understandable to foreign tourists. Onlyin this way can the purpose of cross-cultural communication be achieved.
