This paper attempts to do an empirical research to the transition of literaryperiodicals in1980s (1978-1989). Based on the statistical data and historicalsources, the paper digs deep into the internal mechanism of the study object, and dynamically inspects the following aspects of the transition of the literatureperiodicals: its starting point and phases; its content and characteristics; thecauses and results; the basic momentum, etc. The author makes efforts tobreak through the “traps” established by the literature research itself, andreturn to historical realities of the literature journals, and upon which, makes aconcrete description and analysis of the changing characteristics anddeveloping dynamics of the1980s’ literature periodicals. The first chapter of this article selected topic background, research statusand related concepts and research methods to make the replacement.Thesecond chapter focuses on the historical background of the change anddevelopment of the1980s’ literature periodicals, and the reconstructingprocedures and characteristics of the periodicals’ production system. The thirdchapter focuses mainly on the central and provincial literature periodicals, anddescribes the change of literary journals in1980s. The expression of the papertend to be "historical statement", namely tries to combine the historicaldescription and the theoretical analysis. For example, the first and the third partsin this chapter, mainly make a detail theoretical description of the developingprocedures of the central and provincial literature periodicals in1980s, whilehe second and the forth sections investigate respectively the quantity of theworks of The People’s Literature and the circulation of the provincial literaturejournals. And at the same time, makes a further empirical description of thechanging situation of the periodicals. The fourth chapter, however, is the mainpart of this paper. The existing researches for the journal groups or classes, Ⅰmostly neglected the prefecture-level literary journals and the popular literary periodicals which however, really existed in the literary journal history but gotno discourse right. Based on the research perspective of publishing standard, this paper tries to demonstrate that the prevailing of the popular literaryperiodicals is one of the essential features of the changing and development ofthe1980s’ literary periodicals. In this sense, this paper attempts to divide it intotwo cases, namely the popularization of the prefecture-level periodicals andthe rising of the popular literary periodical itself. And upon which makes anempirical analysis of their development. The fifth chapter aims to explore themotivation factors of the change and development of the1980s’literaryperiodicals. As a communication medium of literary thoughts in certain times, the literary periodical is closely connected with the structure of the social andeconomic system, as well as the communication context of the culture. Inshort, the development and change of the1980s’ literary periodicals resultsfrom the joint effects of various contradictions during that time.In theconclusion part, the paper preliminarily concludes that, the change anddevelopment of the1980s’ literary periodicals is closely related with the socialand historical environment of that time. When inspecting from the developmentlogic of the periodical itself, the rising of the prefecture-level literary periodicalsand the popular ones directly promoted or contributed to the reform of thepublishing system of the literary periodicals. The root of the change of theliterary periodicals is the social influence of the literary in its certain time. Thedirect cause, however, is the market-oriented reform of the literary periodicals,as well as the rise of the mass culture.
