Abstract: Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting is developed by Mr. Teng Teng on the basis ofManchu traditional applique art. It is a kind of artistic form with intense Manchu features,which is full of folk craft of paper cutting, painting, sculpture, Thangka and New Yearpaintings. Appliqué was originated from the nomadic tribes of northern China by the Manchuroots in Jurchen. At that time, the North could not make sericulture and brocade, not to sayembroider. So people decorated clothes, shoes, hats, bow bags, quivers and pouches in adifferent colour fabric, cotton and woolen filling. At the same time, people sewed flowers,pattern, animal head, mow, and colour ink sketch and filled in items such as clothes, shoesand hats, which was called appliqué in tradition. When Nurhachu was the Khan, square rankflags on their chest and back worn by officials were called “repair”(with photos in thethesis). This “appliqué” technique is spread in the community, such as head caps worn byboys and girls’ caps with a wide spread of Lotus. Inspired by “appliqué” art, Mr. Tengdeveloped the techniques, materials and so on, thus Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting came intobeing.The procedures of making Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting are very complex. Steps of theprocedures include design, ingredients, pasting, painting, assembly, and so on. The design ofdrawings is critical because both aesthetic factors and operability should be taken into account.Although some drawings are beautiful, they are not suitable for making Cloth Paste Painting.Long-term experiences show that it’s better to make Cloth Paste Painting in an complex formthan an easy one. Not making it doesn’t mean that people can’t make it, but the effect is notideal. landscape painting is not suitable for making Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting. TengshiCloth Paste Painting are based on pure silk fabric and manufactured with various othermaterials. So after drawing the designs, people should make ingredients according to thedesigns of the drawings, including fabrics and a variety of accessories. If it is the massproduction, ingredients should be made on the numbers of production, such as large packingcases, boxes, even small screws should be correct. The making steps includes molds, moldmaking, cloth paste painting, Ta gold thread, small assembly paste, etc. Colour decorationrequires professional people. They draw paintings according to the characteristics of thepictures, or be impressionistic or realistic. Each step requires preciseness and care withoutsingle point of negligence, thus the works would be exquisite and beautiful. The techniques used in the Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting are stacking method|, embossing method, pullingmethod; folding method, patchwork method, hanging method, The mosaic method and so on.Such a rigorous technique obtained national patent in1995.Tengshi Cloth Paste Painting is a kind of folk crafts full of high techniques, which hasaesthetic features of traditional Chinese painting, Thangka, sculpture, cloisonné, paper-cuttingand New Year paintings, so it has a variety of artistic features of folk arts and crafts.
