Few scholars have studied the realization of interpersonal meaning in political TV interviews, however, the findings of studies of other discourses provide unique perspective and experience for the study on political TV interviews. Halliday argues that language has three meanings:ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning. Interpersonal meaning is that people use language to communicate with others, establish and maintain relationship, influence others’behaviors and express their own opinions. Halliday mainly studies the realization of interpersonal meaning from grammatical level, that is, from the perspective of mood, modality. Besides, there are other means can also realize interpersonal meaning, such as Martin’s Appraisal system and Li Zhanzi’s personal pronouns. Based on Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar, together with Martin and Li Zhanzi’s theories, this study takes Chinese and English Political TV interviews in recent3to4years as instances to demonstrate by what means the interpersonal meaning is realized in Political TV interviews, makes a comparative study of these two kinds of interviews. Based on Halliday’s theories, this dissertation explores the various means realizing interpersonal meaning in Political TV interviews, and tries to find the difference in the realization of Chinese and English interviews.Through the analysis of Chinese and English political interviews, we find that mood, modal operators, personal pronouns and appraisal system are important means to achieve interpersonal meaning. With these means, the guests and politicians express their own attitudes, publicize their political position, close the distance with public and win the trust from the public. Meanwhile, through the contrastive study of these two kinds of interviews, the paper finds that, mood, modal operators, personal pronouns and appraisal system can be used to analyze interpersonal meaning in political TV interviews, however, the quantity of these four means are different in Chinese and English interviews. Because of these differences, the styles of the interviews are distinctive. The English interviews are more casual, while Chinese ones are more solemn. Besides the contrastive study of interviews, the paper makes a comparison between the guests and hosts. Through the analysis of guests’and hosts’ utterances, the paper finds the peculiarities of the interpersonal meanings in political TV interviews. This study of interpersonal meaning will deepen people’s understanding of political TV interviews and will be a helpful supplement to the research on political TV interviews. Meanwhile, it will provide the TV interviews with a new analysis perspective and will enable people to be better informed about how to express interpersonal meaning appropriately.
