| Along with the economic and social development, the communication between China and other countries is becoming more frequent than ever before. Consequently, worldwide exchanges and cooperation demand a larger number of qualified and talented translators. Meanwhile, how to train excellent translators who are capable of meeting social demands is the major issue we face today in translation education. In order to catch up with the needs of current social development, China has established the degree of MTI timely for training professional translators. However, traditional translational practices and high-level translation practitioners were disproportionately limited in the areas of literary translation, appreciation, and theoretical developments, while translation practices on legal texts remain rare.Currently a large amount of Chinese legal texts are waiting to be translated into English so as to meet the needs of foreign legal affairs. However, English translation mistakes appear repeatedly in legal texts:numerous versions of English translation in different texts co-exist without coordination while mistranslation problems are serious; Translation of litigation documents and contracts are not standardized and sufficiently accurate which results in ambiguity. In this case, the English translation of legal texts not only fails to facilitate the easy understanding of foreign readers, but also contradicts the principles of formality, accuracy and solemnity of legal texts. Therefore, we should improve and strengthen the practice in this respect, which is also the purpose of this paper, namely, to summarize more practicable translation strategies through exemplary and specific Chinese-English translation practice.This paper takes the task description and translation strategies of Chinese-English legal translation as the main line, analyzing translation methods and key points in the translation process of Chinese legal contract texts. By running through large numbers of legal journals and relevant materials, consulting legal specialists and taking advantage of media facilities, I collected lots of information regarding legal Chinese-English translation. I also actively participate team work to translate them in spare time and proof repeatedly. After learning the detailed differences and characters between English and Chinese legal texts, we realize that better translation can only be achieved by better understanding of those differences and characters. Therefore, through specific legal translation practice, I summarized my experience and understanding of this specialized process, which may serve as reference for later practice and facilitate the exchanging of ideas among students of different translational fields. In addition, by translation practice, our experience and cognition of Chinese-English legal translation has been further improved with the conclusion of a set of more practical strategies on typical legal texts. |
