| As a unique language phenomenon, metaphor is deeply rooted in culturalbackground. It is also an approach of communication. Therefore, in order to get theaccurate understanding of metaphors, translators should not only take the literalmeaning into account but also consider the culture factors. However, influenced bytraditional view, studies on the translation of metaphors have long focused on literarytexts while overlooking non-literary texts to a large extent.Now, because people regard news as an important tool for communication, itbecomes an indispensable part of people’s life. With more frequent internationalcommunication, news translation has become an increasingly important. Metaphors arewidely used in news makes it necessary to study the translation of metaphoricalexpressions in English news. The study from this new angle not only broadens thescope of metaphor translation but also enriches the content of news translation.However, because of the linguistic and cultural barriers between English and Chinese,errors and problems are often found in English news translation, in particular, thetranslation of metaphors in English news.This thesis studies metaphors translation from the perspective of English newswhich embodies a far vivid feature of metaphors. The author, from the differentlanguage and culture perspective between English and Chinese, divides the metaphorsin English news into three categories:(1) metaphorical expressions projected by thesame conceptual metaphor;(2) metaphorical expressions projected by differentconceptual metaphor;(3) non-metaphorical expressions. Then based on large numbersof English news translation selected from our daily life, the author summarizes twogeneral strategies for translating metaphors in English news. The two generalstrategies are:(1) Retaining the source image of metaphor in English news;(2)Sacrificing the source image of metaphor in English news. And the former covers threespecific strategies:(1) the metaphor to metaphor strategy;(2) the metaphor to similestrategy;(3) the metaphor and paraphrase strategy. The latter covers two specificstrategies:(1) the image substitution strategy;(2) the paraphrase strategy. At last, theauthor summarizes the theoretical and practical meanings of this thesis and hopes thestudy would give some references in the study of metaphors in English news. |
