A Review Of Chuci Studies In The First Ten Years Of This Century(2001-2010)

"Chuci Studies" is research that takes as its subject the great poet Qu Yuan and his works in Chuci, later literary works written in imitation of Chuci, and the study of Chuci criticism.In the first ten years of this century (2001-2010) those PhDs who emerged in the1990s were the core force in Chuci studies; in some ways they and the results of their thinking represent the highest level of Chuci studies thus far. The publications of the first ten years of this century-including books, PhD dissertations, outstanding Master’s theses, journal articles, all levels of academic conferences, and the Journal of Yunmeng, Journal of the Staff and Workers’University, and other scholarly outlets that launched Chuci special editions-all are indelible achievements in the advancement of Chuci studies; all are the valuable fruits of the first ten years of Chuci studies in this century.The most important matters of Chuci studies in this century, and the focal points of this present study, are Chuci philology, Chuci literary aesthetics, Chuci sociology, history of Chuci studies, and Chuci performance studies. The aim of Chuci philology is to verify facts and furnish reliable literary texts; Chuci literary aesthetics takes up the research of Chuci as literary art; Chuci sociology analyzes the social phenomena contained in the Chuci; the study of Chuci history undertakes further study of existing research in order to consider the process of development and trajectory of Chuci studies; and Chuci performance studies includes other forms of art that manifest Chuci and research on these forms of art. This thesis goes through a further classification of these five branches of study, and moreover organizes, introduces, criticizes, and summaries the outstanding results of each category, to lay out a full picture of Chuci studies in the first ten years of this century.On this foundation, this thesis attempts to summarize the unique characteristics and trends of the first ten years of Chuci studies in this century:namely, the scholarship of this era has a foothold in original materials and relates to cultural traditions, but at the same time, it abounds in frivolous and merely utilitarian works. This thesis maintains that the future directions of development for Chuci studies should be:to prioritize the longitudinal organization of Chuci studies, to construct digital processing platforms for Chuci studies, and to promote the transfer of knowledge of Chuci studies through the improvement of the editorial quality of universal teaching materials and textbooks and the development of Chuci performance studies.In sum, each era has its own literature, and each era has its own scholarship; the state of Chuci studies in first ten years of this century was influenced by the social atmosphere.
