| This essay will trace back to the moment of pre-iconology, starting from AbyWarburg’s library and atlas which reflected his inquiry into the survival and afterlifeof antiquities while embodied his non-linear concept of history and a fragmentarymontage structure condensed into temporalities. Warburg’s efforts was echoed inWalter Benjamin’s theses on the philosophy of history in which he stressed theconstellation of history, redemption of the past, and a grasp of history throughfragments. The paradigm of knowledge production and the concept of historyintertwined in Warburg and Benjamin’s unaccomplished projects are constantlyreflected in varied contemporary art practices. Images are ripped off from originalcontext and gather in the present, thus producing and renewing meanings throughmontage structure, thus, redeem the value of memories and objects from history andtradition ruled by the order of time and value. |
