David Herbert Lawrence (1885—1930). is a prominent English novelist of the early20th century in world literature. He is well-known for his deep research on man-and-woman relationship. Women in Love was published in1920. It was Lawrence’s important novel about relationship between men and women. Lawrence devoted all his life to pursuing the ideal relationship between men and women in his novels. His works reveal Lawrence’s healthv and realistic views on the ideal relationship. He elevated the sexual love to a high degree of philosophy and aesthetics.Lawrence states that the machinery civilization represses and distorts human nature, and destroys the integrality of mankind. The repression and distortion make mankind stay in a state of abruption, physically and spiritually. Only when we establish harmonious sexual relationship, can we save the civilization and humanity destroyed by industrial revolution. So. how to maintain the integrity of people, how to maintain the harmony and unity between body and soul of man and woman, and the pursuit of the healthy sexual relationship and the probe into the ideal marriage all very naturally become Lawrence’s focus in his writing. Accordingly, we can say that Lawrence’s view on the ideal relationship is the core of his thought, which is fully embodied in his typical masterpiece Women in Love.The thesis attempts to explore Lawrence’s views on the ideal relationship on the basis of a close reading of his representative novel Women in Love. With the exception of introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of three parts.Chapter one expresses Lawrence’s thought on blood-consciousness, the idea of polarity. The blood-consciousness inspires him to get rid of the old traditional and destroyed industrial civilization into a new world, a harmonious relation. The harmonious relation between men and women is the ideal way to the perfect society and to the wholeness of the human beings. In chapter two. after describing the relations between Birkin and Hermione. Gerald and Gudrun. Lawrence finds that it’s not normal and harmonious, which is also not what Lawrence has spent his lifetime exploring. The star-equilibrium relationship between Birkin and Ursula is what Lawrence has yearned for. which is explained in the chapter three.All in all. Women in Love is a masterpiece of discussing perfect sexual relationship. Birkin and Ursula represent the ideal male-female relationship of Lawrence. Meanwhile Lawrence tries to find the best way to maintain a perfect relationship between men and women in capitalist society based on balanced and harmonious male-female relationship.
