D. H.Lawrence, a giant of the literary world in the20th century, produces a large quantity of works, including mainly The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1921), Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). He proposes to establish a harmonious relationship between man and nature, between man and woman all his lifetime. While studying the two important relationships, Lawrence regards "balance" as a common standard. Therefore, the thesis tries to interpret the texts from the perspective of eco-criticism and the "star-equilibrium" principle. The thesis is divided into five chapters.Apart from a brief introduction to the whole life of Lawrence and his major works The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, the first chapter is focused on the literature review of Lawrence and his works home and abroad in the recent years. On the basis of the literature review above, this thesis proposes a new understanding of Lawrence’s three major novels from the perspective of eco-criticism and the "star-equilibrium" principle, which tentatively aims to set up harmonious relationship between man and woman. The second chapter, the theoretical foundation of the whole thesis, mainly deals with the definition, understanding, assessment and feasibility of eco-criticism and the "star-equilibrium". The eco-criticism lays particular emphasis on the building of a harmonious relationship between man and nature. Due to the devastation of the environment and the highly development of industrialization, the traditional relationship between man and woman is distorted. Lawrence tries to restore the humanity and vitality of human beings dehumanized by mechanical civilization. The "star-equilibrium" principle is concerned about the establishment of a perfect relationship between man and woman, emphasizing a relationship of attraction and repulsion at the same time, like two stars in the sky. It requires not only the unity of man and woman both in flesh and soul but also the independent will of man and woman. The third and forth chapter, as the core of the thesis, concentrate on worldly harmony destroyed by the industrial encroachment and the worldly harmony in the form of star-equilibrium. Lawrence strongly condemns the mechanical civilization, which results in the dehumanization of humanity and the distortion of all relationships between man and woman. The protagonists strive to found an ideal relationship between man and woman. However, under industrial circumstances, man becomes impotent. They indulge themselves in the pursuit of worldly wealth, regardless of the emptiness of their mind. They become alienated and are depraved of the ability of love. As nature can purify the soul, restore people’s life and vigor and return human’s instinct, Lawrence appeals people to attach great importance to the protection of nature. Only through keeping harmonious relationship with nature can man get vitality and renaissance. The balance between man and nature is the prerequisite for the realization of the balance between man and woman. As for the relationship between man and woman, Lawrence proposes the "star^equilibrium" principle. Man and woman, as the oppositional poles, attracts each other. However, in order to be in a balanced state, man and woman have to possess their own integral self. The attraction and repulsion between them needs to exit at the same time to attain a balanced condition. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. Based on the analysis of the above chapters, the thesis highlights that eco-criticism and the "star-equilibrium" principle should be used as a guide to achieve the harmonious relationship between man and nature, and man and woman. Only through a balanced relationship with nature can man realize the ideal bond with woman and his individual being.
