The drum music is an important one of China’s traditional music forms. It is aninstrument and music ensemble form with wind musical instruments and percussioninstruments dominating. Rooted in the old traditional music culture and goingthrough a long journey for more than2000years, it has appealed to the world with itsflexible and delicate, rough and bold artistic style and unique artistic value. Thesouthwest Shandong drum music is an essential and significant part of the Shandongdrum music. As a strong local characteristic drum music form, it is well known farand wide with its peculiar artistic charm, standing out in the whole drum musicrealm.The article arms to research a local drum music band with Yin Shuanglai, alocal drummer in Jia Xiang area of Shandong province as its core. From long-termartistic career, he has accumulated a wealth of the drum music. After years of studyand perseverance, he has increasingly made his music perfect and profound,eventually forming his own unique artistic style. In2010he established and foundedYin Shuang Lai Drum Band named after him. In February2008, he was evaluatedand recognized as a typical successor of the southwest Shandong drum music amongthe second batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects, thus becoming oneof the major representatives of Jia Xiang area and even the southwest Shandongdrum music. He has made great contributions to the music inheritance anddevelopment. By keeping track of the local activities in Jia Xiang area and the bandwhich is quite active in the folk ceremonies, and from the relevant perspectives ofmusicology, ethnomusicology and folklore, it is to explain the wind-percussionmusic history, culture and styles, to think about the internal relations among band,ceremony and drum music elements with the purpose of understanding it by societyand looking into society through it. In addition, it is to fundamentally state why in themodern and civilized society, the drum music still has its own space.The article is made up of six parts:Part One:Introduction, briefing the reasons for the subject study and currentresearch situation and achievements.Part Two:Starting from the drum music and the history of Shandong drummusic, it is to simply introduce the historical and cultural background of Jia XiangDrum Music existence mainly through the geographical environment and humanityenvironment etc. Part Three:It is to introduce Yin Shuang Lai Drum Band in Jia Xiang County.Commencing from the band founder---Yin Shuanglai’s life and achievements,according to abundant on-the-spot investigations, narrations of the members of theband, ways of inheritance, characteristics and the situation and income of the band, itis to understand the development of the band from different perspectives and thechanges of social positions of the arts.Part Four: Briefing and analyzing the musical instruments used by the band,performing styles and commonly used instruments in folk activities.Part Five: Ceremony, it is to record the processes of folk funeral ceremoniesand wedding ceremonies based on a great number of on-the-spot investigationmaterials and detail the roles the drum music has played in the process of theceremonies and analyze its functions and significance the drum music has had in folkceremonies.Part Six:It is to contemplating the development and inheritance in modernsociety. With the progress of times, as the traditional drum music, the drum musicdoes not rest complacently on its own laurels but positively meets new cultures andthe impact of new music, continuously absorbing nutrients to enrich it and adaptingto the trend of development. The article overviews the crisis of inheritance that thesouthwest Shandong drum music is currently facing and put forward somecorresponding measures for reference.
