A Report On The English Translation Of The Story Of Big Nose

Literary translation is totally different from non-literary translation. In literarytranslation, translators not only have to faithfully convey the contents of the sourcetext and but also have to faithfully reproduce the “charm” of the source text includingits writing style and cultural connotations of the source text. How to achieve “charm”in literary translation has always been a heated topic among translation scholars. Thisarticle is a study report of a literary translation. First of all, the author translated TheStory of Big Nose, which is a famous short story by Mao Dun. Then, based on how toachieve “charm” in literary translation, with the translating process and concreteexamples, the author summarized and analyzed the translation difficulties in theprocess and translating strategies from the following five aspects: the description ofdetails, the description of mentality, ironic expressions, long&complicated sentencesand culture-specific words. It is concluded that precise choice of vocabulary, propertranslating of details, the accurate understanding of character’s mentality, appropriatemastery of the style and language features of the original works and proper translationof culture-specific words are prerequisites for achieving “charm” in literarytranslation.
