This paper makes a semantic analysis of compounds and phrases of "nose" in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, then it explains the semantic relations among various meanings of "nose" in four languages from the perspective of lexical morphology and lexical semantics on the basis of the corpora collection and inductive methods.Firstly, the paper classifies the compound words of "nose" into "nose+n, nose+v, nose+adj" and "n+nose, v+nose, adj+nose" on the basis of semantics, and then makes contrastive analysis on the common and the differences of their semantic relations. Secondly, according to the basic meaning and extended meanings of "nose", the paper classifies the meanings into 11 types:"BREATHE, OLFACTION, VOCALIZATION", "NOSE SECRETION", "NOSE COMPONENT", "PROMINENCE", "BEHAVIOUR, ATTITUDE", "EMOTION", "SPACE-TIME", "HUMAN", "ORIGIN", "KNIT", "SNORE", including 7 types of common meaning:"BREATHE, OLFACTION,VOCALIZATION", "NOSE SECRETION", "NOSE COMPONENT", "PROMINENCE", "BEHAVIOUR, ATTITUDE", "EMOTION", "SPACE-TIME" and 4 types of uncommon meaning:"HUMAN", "ORIGIN", "KNIT", "SNORE".Through the contrastive semantic analysis of the phrases "nose" among English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, complicated inter relationships are found. The same meaning can be expressed by different classification and the same classification can express different meanings. |
