The topics of this book are: Chinese and Western thinking on translation, thelimits of translatability, when is a translation not a translation, why cultures developcertain genres at certain times, what is the relationship between Translation Studiesand Cultural Studies.(Google book review)Based on the translation of the first five parts of this book, the thesis mainlydeals with the translation strategies on complex English sentences. It consists of fourchapters: Chapter1, task description, gives a brief introduction of the book and itssignificance. Chapter2, task process, describes the process of translation, includingthe preparations, schedule and quality control. Case analysis is chapter3, in whichtypical examples are chosen from the text to explain the translation methods used bythe author. The final part is the conclusion, which emphasizes that the translation ofcomplex English sentences is a challenge even for experienced translators. It has beendiscussed by many scholars, but it is still worthy of further study. The thesis focuses on the translation of complex English sentences. In theprocess, the translator first analyzes and figures out the logic relationship of theoriginal text basing on the western thinking-mode, then express it according to theChinese idiomatic structures, and then proofreads the text, and finally gets a faithfuland smooth translation.Recently, the translation research for long English sentences has drawn moreand more people’s attention. However, it is not easy to define the long sentence, forlong is a fussy word, different people give different answer on that. Moreover, thestrategies of the translation in the past were too theoretical, so it is difficult to followthem in practice. Changed perspective, this thesis is entitled On the Translation ofComplex English Sentences, because the complex sentence in English grammar has aclear quantitative indicator. And this thesis shows the case analysis of the examplesin a graphic way in order to let the reader understand it at a glance and follow iteasily. Up to now, no Chinese version of this book is available in China. Hopefully, thetranslation of the academic work can help readers in China know more abouttranslation studies abroad and arouse their interest in this discipline.
