A Functionalist Approach To Errors In C-E Translation Of Corporate Profiles

As a case study of translated corporate profiles of ceramic and porcelaincompanies, present research attempts to analyze the translation errors that frequentlyoccur in C-E translation of corporate profiles, with Nord‘s functional classification oftranslation errors and Carl James‘error analysis theory as its theoretical basis. Besides,underlying reasons behind these errors and strategies for improving corporate profiletranslation are also provided. Hopefully by analyzing errors in C-E translation ofcorporate profiles, the author can, on the one hand, make some contribution toimproving corporate profile translation; and on the other hand, shed a ray of light onfuture study of such translation.In this thesis, qualitative research method is adopted to explore C-E translation ofcorporate profiles. The author first briefly reviews the functionalist theory, CarlJames‘error analysis theory and previous studies on C-E translation of corporateprofiles. Then she continues to establish the theoretical framework for the whole study,taking Nord‘s functional classification of translation errors and Carl James‘erroranalysis theory as theoretical basis and extensive reading of translated corporateprofiles of porcelain and ceramic companies as case backup. Base on this theoreticalframework, the author then analyzes the errors in C-E translation of corporate profiles.Wherever necessary, examples, which are selected from the current website ofceramic and porcelain companies, will be provided to illustrate the author‘sviewpoints. After that, the author moves on to explore the underlying reasons behindthose errors analyzed previously. Following the analysis of reasons, the author thenpresents the strategies applicable for improving C-E translation of corporate profiles.Finally, limitations of this thesis and suggestions for future study are also provided inthis thesis.
