A Study Of Liang Qichao’s Translation Activities From The Perspective Of Boudieu’s Sociology Theory

On the basis of Boudieu’s sociology theory, this paper undertakes a research on thethree aspects of Liang Qichao’s translation: Liang’s translation theories, the formation ofhis theories and the social effects of his translation theories. As a powerful weapon for hispolitical pursuits, Liang’s translation theories were focused on social targets and effects.This paper takes a deep analysis of the social targets and effects of Liang’s translation byemploying the three main concepts of Boudeu’s sociology theory, i.e. capital, habitus andfield.This paper is made up of6chapters. The first chapter introduces the researchbackground, the object and its significance. The second is a brief introduction to Boudieu’ssociological theory including a concise explanation of its appliance to translation studies.The third chapter gives a comprehensive introduction of Liang’s translation activitiesincluding his translation ideas, practice and the strategies and methods used. The fourthgives explanations to the reason, i.e. purpose, of his translation from the perspective ofBoudieu’s theory. The fifth focuses on the effects that his translation activities achieved.The sixth is a conclusion.The conclusions of the thesis are: Liang’s translation activities are performed underspecial social circumstances. He used translation as a tool to change social capital. Throughleading and advocating social reform, he introduced new habitus into China. Being afamous social activist, he took advantage of his social capital to accelerate the formation ofnew habitus and field. In this way, he had made a positive contribution to change socialideology and to promote the enlightenment of the society.
