Zheng Zhenduo,a prominent writer, translator and scholar in modern China,is regarded as “Chinese encyclopedist” for his remarkable achievements in various fields. He began to translate in the 1920 s,and his translations make a significant contribution to the development of new Chinese culture. In 1922,he published Stray Birds, which received highly approving comments and enjoyed great popularity. But studies of it have been insufficient, especially when it comes to Zheng's choices of translation material. In the late 1990 s,translation studies witnessed the advent of a new paradigm shift – the “sociological turn”.Bourdieu's central concepts-field,capital and habitus have been reinterpreted in translation studies that allow researchers to investigate translation phenomena from both macro and micro aspects.Drawing on these concepts, this thesis aims to analyze both the external social-cultural context and the inner individual factors conditioning Zheng's selection and translation of Stray Birds. The study shows that the May Fourth Movement within the power field and the New Poetry Movement within the literary field exert great influence on Zheng's selection of Stray Birds.Meanwhile, social capital owned by Zheng Zhenduo and Tagore's symbolic power also contribute to the choice.Zheng's social trajectory, literary preference and translation thoughts affect and structure his personal habitus, which wields influence on the selection of Stray Birds as translation material.Besides, the immature vernacular Chinese and Zheng's culture capitals in classical Chinese co-formed a distinctive style of Zheng's translation of Stray Birds,a blending of Europeanized Chinese and classical Chinese.
