A Study On English Translation Of Chenzhong De Chibang From The Perspective Of Grammatical Metaphor

Chenzhong De Chibang is a contemporary Chinese novel written by Zhang Jie. Itsketches a battle about reform of economic management system in industry departmentduring from1970s to1980s. It won the second Maodun Literature Prize, and enjoyed a greatpopularity in literature circle. Full of China’s historical and cultural characteristics, the novelhas its unique language features. The thesis has compared its English versions by HowardGoldlatt and Gladys Yang. Because of differences between Chinese and English, the twotranslators often choose different expression to represent the meaning and context of thenovel, especially when dealing with the grammatical metaphors.Having done a comparative study in terms of ideational, interpersonal, and textualmetaphor, we can conclude that both translators did not perform well in dealing with theideational metaphor, especially the nominalization and adjectivization. The raise of the rankto represent the Grammatical Metaphors resulted in the lost of conciseness and the emphasisof the original text; In interpersonal metaphor, the two translators neglected the metaphors ofmood. They selected a more direct way of expressions where the emotion and statuerelationship between the speakers were not reflected. While in metaphors of modality,Goldblatt did better than Yang, the context of the novel reproduced well because of hiscareful consideration in modal values and responsibility; And in textual metaphor, Goldblatt’stranslation was more appropriate both in reference and nominalization, which not only madethe whole text cohesive in context, but also distinguished the characters. In all, Goldblatt’sversion is more successful in reproducing the grammatical metaphors, which makescontributions to the translation quality.In all, we can conclude that Grammatical Metaphor plays an important role incommunication of information, the emotion expression of the speaker and the organization oftext, whose renderings may directly or indirectly influence the quality of translations.
