Ha Jin is a prominent Chinese American writer in the world, his works havealmost won all the important prizes in America. He is very good at digging humannature among common people in his works. Many scholars in China showed greatinterests in Ha Jin’s works, some held positive views; however, some kept negativeview against his works. In this thesis, the writer spares no effort to analyze the imageof the Other identity of Lin Kong in Waiting, and further on, points out its academicmeaning of this image and the objective effect it reaches.By employing the theory of the Other, the image of Lin Kong was carefullyanalyzed from different aspects. Lin Kong is a tragic protagonist. He is a “the Other” inhis family as well as in society. Lin Kong is a nobody just like anyone walking in thestreet. His suffering is typical for all the common people. The image of Lin Kong isdiscussed on the bases of the Other theory. The life of Ha Jin and his achievements isintroduced, the objective and significance of this thesis is illustrated together with themethodology and general structure. Literature review on Waiting at home and abroad ispresented in a detailed way. Then the introduction to the theory of the Other isfollowed, its origin, development, characteristics, the methodology as well asrelationship between texts and this theory is illustrated. The analysis of the image LinKong is dealt with from different aspects. All the analyses indicate that Lin Kong is theOther in every way. The academic significance of this research is summarized in theend, at the same time, this research points out that Lin Kong is a typical image of acertain type of men, we should face the weakness of these people. It is one-sidedopinion to criticize Ha Jin for currying favor with the Western readers intentionally bybelittling the image of Chinese people.From the above analysis, we can see that the image of Lin Kong has a commonsense, he stands for a type of men, not only for Chinese men but for all the men in theworld. From Lin Kong, we can see the dilemma which any common people could face,the personality defects of Lin Kong can be seen on everybody more or less. This novelteaches us to concern the deep agony human being may suffer in life.
