Beethoven was a famous German pianist and composer. The32piano sonatas hecomposed have significant positions in the history of music. They have greatinfluence both for the pianist and the composer. This paper selects “Opus13No.8(Pathetique)” Sonata and “Opus81a (Farewell)” Sonata as the research objects. Theauthor mainly does the study on the overall analysis and comparative study, andcombines with practical experience for interpretation of performing.“Pathetique” and “Farewell” Sonata are the author’s most favorite sonatas. Theauthor have all sorts of problems encountered during the exercise, which hadmotivated the interest and determination for the works of intensive study. This papertakes analysis and comparative study on creative techniques of these two works, andsummarizes Beethoven’s musical language and style characteristics. From thecomparative study of the two works, it also sums up his creative ideas at differenttimes, which contributes to a deeper understanding of the connotation of Beethoven indifferent stages of life which his works show.The thesis consists of introduction, the middle four chapters and the conclusion.Introduction section contains the background and significance of the research topic,the statement of the research status; Chapter2and3make a detailed analysis of thesetwo works from each movement of the structure, form, harmony and creativeapproach; Chapter4focuses on similarities and differences of these two works,changes and developments; Chapter5studies the interpretation of performing forthese two works. The conclusion summarizes the typical characteristics of these twoworks from different creative periods, and excavates from the order of the creationfrom the early to the late works of the style of some subtle changes.The study of these two works intend to better grasp the development process andinternal relationships of the Beethoven’s piano sonata, and to get a deeperunderstanding of the connotation of the works. It also provides references for teachingand playing.
