John Ronald Reuel Tolkien(Jan.3rd,1892—Sept.2nd,1973)Is a professor from theUniversity of Oxford, and an ancient linguists, Of course, he is best known for hisidentity of fantasy fiction writer. His famous novels including,"The Hobbit" and "TheLord of the Rings" trilogy,"The Silmarillion","Children of Turin" etc. Tolkien usedhis splendid imagination to build a magnificent and complex magical world----theMiddle-earth for the readers. In this beautiful and mysterious land, there lived with avariety of and fantastic creatures: humans, elves, hobbits, wizards, dwarfs, orcs,treebeards and trolls. At the same time as a university professor of linguistics and theRoman Catholic, Tolkien by virtue of his knowledge about medieval European historyof religion and culture, mythology and language study, to put them perfectly into hisfantasy tales. When people read the tales, they would feel Tolkien’s classical sense andalso to comprehend the deep thought of his philosophical metaphor.The purpose of this paper writing is trying to clarify "the Lord of the Rings" as amodern mythology of the greatness and profoundness. Tolkien integrated into thisfantasy masterpiece with his classical philosophical thought, he used vivid stories toanalyze the good and evil in human nature, and also trying to use this trilogy torebuild modern society’s the moral and faith.This paper will commence from Tolkien’s classical thoughts, and combined withhis life experiences and academic achievements, to analyze in the classical sense of"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. This article is contains five parts. The first part isabout Tolkien’s life experiences and the research review on "The Lord of the Rings" athome and abroad, which leads to the purpose of this thesis. The second part is mainlyabout how Tolkien get his classical sense, This section is based on "The Lord of theRings" series, and integrated Tolkien’s research in the academic literature of"Beowulf" and Chaucer, to analysis the causes of the formation of Tolkien’s classicalthought, and the creation of the root causes of "The Lord of the Rings", The third partis consists of Chapter Two and Three,I will use the modernity theory, ecological ethics and Plato’s theory of good and evil of human nature, to analyze reflection onmodernity and the concept of good and evil in "The Lord of the Rings", and I will alsotried to find out where is Tolkien’s ecological view comes from.The fourth part willuse Tolkien’s second word theory to analyze the classical sense form of "The Lord ofthe Rings", and try to find the reason why Tolkien was taken epic mythology as thenovel form. The fifth part is epilogue.
