A Language Analysis Of Translated Chinese Based On Parallel Corpus

It has been several decades since translated language was studied. At home and abroad, many scholars have made great contributions to language study, for example:Even-Zohar Hatim, Duff, Mona Baker, Wang Kefei, Ke Fei, Qin Hongwu, Wu Ang, Huang Libo and so on. Among them Baker has come up with translation universals, which pave the road for translated language study. In China, translated language studies have been carried through microscopic and microcosmic perspectives. Overall features of translated language are studied, and studies are also conducted on word basis, for example:Ke Fei studied the using situation of "Ba-constructure"(把字结构) in translated Chinese based on parallel corpus, and found that "ba" contracture is more frequently used in translated Chinese while it is more frequently used in literature than in non-literature; Qin Hongwu and Wang Kefei studied chinese translations of "so......that" based on parallel corpus, and found that the main translation form of this structure is non-equivalence while in translated Chinese it is richer in translational forms since in native Chinese, there is no set Chinese contracture applying to it and so on.In this paper, the author conducted a study of translated Chinese translations of the word "and" based on Chinese-English parallel corpus created by Wang Kefei by Quantitative method, qualitative study, contrastive analysis and corpus-based analysis. There were several purposes; one was to describe translated language with Chinese translations of the word "and" mainly from appearing frequencies in different native English texts in different areas, types of writing, eras and so on; another purpose of this paper was to clarify features of translated Chinese by comparing frequencies of Chinese translations of the word "and" in different texts in translated Chinese and native Chinese respectively based on corpus; the final purpose was to study which kind of translation methods is more frequently used in this corpus based on linguistic data collected through corpus, which can help people make their judgment objectively.There are several findings of this study. The first one is that meanings of the word "and" shows the tendency of simplifying; the second one is that there is no set standard right for all studies, but the majority of Chinese translations of the word "and" are used more frequently used in translated Chinese than in native Chinese while the minority are overused in translated Chinese; the third one is that in this corpus, about54.31%of the word "and" are translated literally. At the end, the author put forward that decentering degree should be calculated by the frequency gap of a certain word in translated Chinese and in the native Chinese, which still needs further discussion.
