According to Halliday’s framework of functional grammar, the three meta-functions of language consist of ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. Ideational function is the function of language which conveys human beings to build a mental picture of reality, to make sense of what goes on in the extra world and inner world. At the level of semantic, ideational function is mainly achieved by transitivity. According to how meanings are created and understood, the transitivity system can be divided into six cub-categories:material process, relational process, mental process, verbal process, behavioral process, and existential process. The aim of transitivity analysis is from the choices of process types and participants and circumstantial elements, let Human beings social and psychological experiences reappear. Nowadays, transitivity has been applied to a wide range of fields (Short,1976; Kennedy,1982;朱士昌,1995;申丹,2006). Huang Guowen (2002,2003) and Zeng Xiangfang (2010) have successfully applied transitivity to the field of poetry translation.Shui Diao Ge Tou-Ming Yue Ji Shi You, the master piece of Su Shi who was a famous poet in Northern Song Dynasty. It is an exclusive and distinctive ci-poetry, has been spread from generation to generation. Unfortunately, none of researchers has studied the ci-poetry from the linguistic perspective. This thesis, based on Functional Grammar, comparatively analyzes the ci-poetry and its five English versions from transitivity aspect. On one hand, by analyzing the process types of the source text and the target texts, the perception and appreciation can be achieved better. On the other hand, through the comparative analysis of process types and participants, we can find out whether the translators correctly understand the intention of the poet and whether the artistic conception of the image is captured by the translators.
