Study On American Image In Gelingyan’ Novels

Life of Chinese emigrants is a very important theme in Geling Yan’screation, and the America image in Geling Yan’s novels is attractive.This thesis tries to do a systematic analysis based on the theory ofimagologie of comparative literature.There are four chapters in this thesis. The introduction partintroduces Geling Yan’s lifetime\creation and the main study about hernovels. Chapter one abstracts American image from Geliang Yan’s novels.There are three parts of American image that Geling Yan made for us:powerful and free; lonely and indifference; racialism still existing.Chapter two makes comments on several characteristics of Geling Yan’American image, including humanistic care in different cultures,Displacement Consciousness and the identity of national culture, culturalreflections from The Other to The Self, the global horizon of culturalintegration. Chapter three analyses the reasons why Geling Yan makessuch an American image. It is because of the following three perspectivesfrom the external aspects. Firstly the bilingual culture influence and thedigest of western and Chinese culture make her a more dramatic andmore iconic American image. Secondly the deep thought of American social crisis, the disadvantages of American individualism\alienation\racialism still severe are the main targets that Geling Yanreconsiders and criticizes. Thirdly the mutual explanation between thenational fate and the personal experience, Geling Yan connects both thehistory of Chinese immigrants and her own experience in order to revaluethe unfair treatment that Chinese immigrants once had.
