Translation Report On Beautiful Stories From Shakespeare

This is a report on the author’s translation practice. Twenty stories from the book Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare complied by Edith·Nesbit were translated, four of which were used as case study objects to be analyzed, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, As You Like and The Winter Tales. The report was completed on the basis of the four stories in view of the problems occurred in the process of translation.Through this translation experience, the author has found that in translating children’s literary stories, careful choice and treatment of styles is especially important. Therefore some examples are given to demonstrate the importance of proper handling of styles from three aspects, namely styles of tale narration and translation, styles of nursery rhymes and translation, styles dialogue and translation. Some corresponding strategies are offered respectively, successful choice and translation of styles of tale narration could be realized by using lexical addition, syntax splitting, using complimentary and derogatory words in purpose; Styles of nursery rhymes could be dealt by way of free translation, information compensation and change of rhyme order, rich figures of speech to produce a vivid, brief and readable effect; As for styles of dialogues, good translation work could be achieved through addition of auxiliary verbs, interjections and punctuations.On the basis of case analysis, the author further points out that translation of children’s literary stories is no easy job at all. To cultivate fun of children, to keep young at heart, to understand children’s psychology, to accumulate related cultural background knowledge are all preconditions for good translation of children’s literary stories, while proper choice of styles is the key point and also the most difficult point in successful translation of children’s literary stories.
