Robert Frost is one of the most notable poets in America in the20thcentury.Though he wrote several natural poems with the positive themes, the transitionalindustrial age of America in20thcentury inevitably exerted a pessimistic influence onhis works. It is essential that we make a systematical study on his poetry withmelancholy elements.A large number of poetry of Robert Frost is full of dark mood and desolateenvironment. Through the utilization of the melancholy elements and the symbolism,Frost explored the deep philosophical connotations hidden in his works, whichexpressed Frost’s strong indignation and denunciation towards the inhumane naturalworld. In addition, Frost tended to show his sympathy and care for the mankind livingin the confusion and helpless community. As a matter of fact, the essence of RobertFrost’s poetry is that Frost wants to guide the people to seek the light and truth,moreover, to build a free and harmonious spiritual wonderland.This paper aims at studying the application of the metaphor and symbolism in themelancholy poetry of Robert Frost and its connotations, hoping that we could get acomprehensive understanding of Robert Frost himself and his poetry.The paper is divided into five parts. Chapter one gives a detailed introductionabout Robert Frost himself, his works and the structure of the paper. Chapter two isabout the literature review. Firstly it explains the meaning of Symbolism and thestatement of melancholy poetry. According to the imageries appearing in the tragicpoetry, the paper divides the melancholy poetry into three categories, that is to say, thenatural poems, dark poems and the poems revealing the humanistic concerns andreflection. Secondly it is a detailed discussion of the unique creative techniques inFrost’s poems from poetic language, poetic images and poetic characteristics. Chapterthree makes a detailed analysis about the typical melancholy works with symbolism.Chapter four explores the reasons why Robert Frost’s poetry is suffused withmelancholy color. Chapter five summarizes the paper and makes a conclusion thatthrough the utilization of the symbolism, Frost deeply expresses his complicatedattitudes towards the nature and society. On the one hand, Frost extols the flawlessbeauty of Mother Nature; on the other hand, nature acts as a terrifying power. HenceFrost expresses his strong denunciation towards the inhumane natural world. In addition,he shows a sympathy and care for the unaided people in the modern society.
