Prostitute is one of the most sensitive topics of human beings. In order to avoidthe sensitivity brought by talking about “prostitute” directly, people have createdmassive related substitutes of prostitute. This article first introduces the concept of“Prostitute Euphemism”. It is guided by the fundamental theories of euphemismstudies, sociolinguistics and contrastive linguistics, taking main materials from“Dictionary of Chinese Euphemisms” edited by Zhang Gonggui and “A Dictionary ofEnglish Euphemisms” edited by Liu Chunbao, also “Modern Chinese Dictionary”,“Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary”, online “Han Code”,etc.utilized the methods of description and explanation to make a classification andcomparison of Chinese and English prostitute euphemism, then find the similaritiesand differences, afterwards dig the reason. This article contains four chapters:The first chapter is “prolegomenon”. By summarizing up the current state of theprostitute euphemism, this chapter starts with the origin and development of theChinese and Western prostitutes, to determine the definition, characteristics anddefining principles of prostitute euphemism, and provide a brief introduction of theresearch purposes, methods and meaning.The second chapter is “the comparison of the Chinese-English prostituteeuphemism in the performance content and structure”.This chapter makes aclassification from the lexical level, both performance content can be divided intoprostitute, whoremaster, pimp, brothel and prostitution, whoring; and structure can bedivided into semantic and voice tactful, difference lies in the focus.The third chapter is “the comparison of the Chinese-English prostituteeuphemism in the semantic field and language rheological”, spanning to the semanticlevel and application level. Generic field can be divided into animals, plants andcolor;and language rheological can be divided into curing and instant.The forth chapter is “the reasons for the differences between the Chinese andEnglish prostitute euphemism”. According to the above, this chapter starts from theword system and the idea to summarize the reason for these differences.The conclusion part is the summary of the full text, pointing out the lack of thispaper, and the research direction in the future.
