Abstract/Summary:
Through doing investigation and research in English corner which can be viewed asa typical linguistic context and data resource, this dissertation tries to identify andexplain the interaction and mutual-influence between two very distinct linguisticconceptions, communication competence and communication strategy and verifies thepositive impact on learner’s ability in foreign language communication exerted byadopting certain communication strategies.The issue regarding the linguistic concept of communication competence andcommunication strategy has long been there and has aroused tremendous interests inacademic research ever since their being first advocated respectively by Hymes andSelinker in1972. Various definitions and classifications of communication competencemodes and communication strategies types have also been posed by previousresearchers, which are able to inspire and enlighten further and deeper explorationconcerning this topic, especially in language teaching methodology field. Also, Englishcorner, a popular linguistic phenomenon among Chinese English learners, is worthy ofpeople’s concerning due to its part in providing a more similar language atmosphere.With the intention of connecting these two into a unique course, some questions relatedto the interaction of the reinforcement of communication competence and employmentof communication strategies for the English corner participants are prepared for theresearch as the entry point. Also the English corner activity held in the new campus ofHefei University of Technology is selected as the data source for some necessarylinguistic data. Some approaches, like observation, questioning and participation areemployed to fulfill the target. After taking all necessary research measures, the authoracquire some important results as the combination of the previous theory reservationand the linguistic data collection. For instance, the positive influence on thecommunication competence from communication strategies in English corner isexplained by analyzing what the participants said and how they expressed which are observed in English corner activities. What’s more, with the effect of lighting both thetheory accumulation and pragmatic engagement, these research fruits may not reflectgreat innovation from a certain perspective, otherwise make another contribution to thepromotion of the significance and necessity of the integration of conventional grammarteaching and communication approach.Without any doubt, there must be some weakness or something ought to be revisedor improved for this dissertation research.“Not all-inclusive” or ambiguity attheoretical level might be brought out. In addition, the combination of data collectionresults and theory framework may fall into over-subjective level due to insufficiency,both in theory accumulation and pragmatic investigation. However, these deficiencies,from a different view, help to lay a more solid foundation for future understanding ofthis topic and bring more improve room for this research.
