This thesis is an introspective research report on the translation of the firstchapter of Northern Rivers. The author of the fiction is Zhang Chengzhi, a famousnovelist, who began his publication from1978and won many prize for national shortfiction and novella.The first part of the report is the introduction to the source text, which includesthe information about the author of the fiction and the analysis of the source text.Then follows the overview of the translation process, including the difficulties thepresent author met during the translation, the ways of handling those difficulties andthe introduction about some guiding translation theories adopted in the translationprocess. The third part is the main body of the whole thesis, which analyzes someexamples to explain those adopted translation theories and strategies or methods andevaluates the translation effect. Specifically, this part comprises five aspects:1.Handling of cultural clues;2. Handling of onomatopoeia;3. Two necessary translationstrategies in translation;4. Reproduction of some language features in the novella;5.Seeking for language naturalness. The last part is the conclusion, in which the presentauthor presents what he has gained from the translation experience, the weaknesses ofhis translation as well as his goal in the future. It is hoped that this thesis will beconducive to the translation practice of translation learners.
