That he has examined men’s ever-diversifying living maladiesin an absolutely skeptical perspective, has showed J.M. Coetzee’sethical awareness as a soul-watcher of human beings. In this paper, Iattempt to give a close reading on his ethical appeals.Firstly revealing the chaos in men’s ethical world after theoriginal one having been destroyed because of war and immigrationwhich deprived their old living ways and led to cultural dispositionand unrecognized identification, Coetzee metaphorically created aseries of disabled and mortally ill figures who suffered doubletorture from mental and physical.According their attitude taken to the surroundings and others, then I will give some specific dissection respectively by dividingthem into four groups——the quiet derelicts, the lonely isolates, the aggressive invaders and the humble compromisers.Typically, Coetzee’s characters are all self-reflective, especiallyafter encountering some special strangers under whose stimulationthey began a long way of returning to a living way of love whichpartially means self-redemption, conscience, forgiveness and eagerthirst for hopeful living.Coetzee’s this quest is obscure, yet is quite a sweet beginningfor the reconstruction of earthly paradise with love and equalness.
