| By comparing the Chinese version of3classical British and American literary works of China mainland with that of Taiwan, this thesis aims at discovering and analyzing the linguistic differences in E-C translation of British and American literary works on both sides of Taiwan straight in a more comprehensive way than previous researchers under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory, skopostheorie, Reader-Response theory and Receptive Aesthetics. These differences mainly lie in three aspects:words selection, the elucidation of original meaning and the reproduction of the source-text style. In novel translation, mainland text advocates foreigronizing strategy, builds aesthetic appeal and remain the original rhetorical effects while Taiwan text prefers domesticating one with its expressions being simple and concise. In drama translation, mainland text emphasizes transliteration and most of its languages are ambiguous and absurd whereas Taiwan text stresses paraphrases and seems more performable. In prose translation, mainland text tends to employ short sentences and is very descriptive nevertheless Taiwan text is inclined to adopt long and westernized sentences which are devoid of beauty. This study contends that two versions of translation are distinctive. To start with, we should be fully aware of the fact that the cross-straights differences in literature translation will continue existing in a long period of time. Additionally, we should take an attitude of tolerance towards this problem. It is hardly possible for people with different backgrounds to interpret one literary work in the same way. Only through complementing and drawing on the merits of each other can the translators on both sides of the strait acquire more perfect target texts and jointly boost the development of Chinese translated literature. |
