Mao Dun, Chinese famous modern writer. He is famous for his unique writing style, large numbers of works and has great influence on Chinese literature. Mao Dun is a writer good at learning; he was profoundly influenced by Russian writer Tolstoy who he also admired most. He learned from Tolstoy not only in thought, but also in writing. Mao Dun has said that his creation of "Midnight" was influenced and inspired by "War and Peace"."War and Peace" is an epic masterpiece, which reproduces a whole era in a special large scale, with overpowering momentum, wide range of scenes and varieties of characters."Midnight" is also an epic novel, with grand structure, many characters, complex plot, various and crisscross clues. The two novels have much in common in structure, writing skills and artistic technique. But Mao Dun didn’t simply imitate Tolstoy; he has his own innovation in the basis of learning. So by comparing the two novels, this paper aims to find how "Midnight" is influenced and inspired by "War and Peace"; to find the commons and differences between them; to analyze the uniqueness of "Midnight". Through the comparison of the two works, this paper discusses Mao Dun’s relations with modern Russian literature, especially with Tolstoy, how Mao Dun learned from Tolstoy and the uniqueness of his works which were created on the basis of national life reality.
