Hugo was born in1802, at which time urbanization and modernizationdeveloped rapidly and greatly under the influence of industrial revolution in Paris.The reconstruction made Paris a modern city in true sense. The urbanization changedthe structure of the population, leaded to a turbulent and unsafe life and larger gapbetween the rich and the poor. As a humanitarian artist, Hugo paid attention to the lifeof depressed class. His Les Miserables covered every corner of Paris. He consideredParis as a center, described the details about the construction, the street, the life andthe revolutionary uprisings, to represent the image of Paris in his mind.This essay researches the cause of image of Paris in Les Miserables. We get themeaning of writing about Paris through the analysis of concrete content in the processof unscrambling the image of Paris.There are three main parts in this essay. The imageof Paris in Les Miserables, I analyze Paris as “the capital of the world” and “thevelarium tent of the human being” throughout the description about the urban spaceand the construction of the figure in Hugo’s novel, then study the city Hugo lovesdeeply. The origin of the image of Paris, I analyze the cause of the image of Paris inLes Miserables. Hugo’s attachment to the city in which he was born was very great.He put Paris in his deep mind even in the period of exile. Therefore, the image ofParis in his novel was positive. With the combined effect of trend of thought inliterature and art and social history factors, he concluded the image of Paris in LesMiserables. The meaning of writing about Paris, I analyze the image of Paris in thisnovel, then study the contradictoriness of Hugo’s creation approach, totipotencyomnipotency of his narration mode and the influence of the narration about Paris onthe creation of his novel.
