Bearing distinctive cultural features, Ci poetry is a treasure not only to classical Chinese culture but also to the world literature due to its conciseness in language and richness in meaning. Ci poetry mainly falls into two types in Song Dynasty:one is Wanyueci poetry, and the other one is Haofangci poetry. Between these two types, Wanyueci poetry outnumbers Haofangci poetry a lot and contains numerous well-known masterpieces. The term "gestalt" originated in Germany, meaning "whole". The theory of image-G actualization is first brought up by Jiang Qiuxia in Aesthetic Progression in Literal Translation:Image-G Actualization published in2002. Jiang holds the viewpoint that the success of a transaltion is up to the realization of image-G in the target language. This thesis aims to manage Wanyueci poetry as a whole under the instruction of image-G actualization, intending to point out the similarities and differences of different versions in school, choice of words, syntactical coherence, textual coherence, and their way of handling images. It also tries to analyze the influences and transmission effect that different versions may bring in order to reach a summary and make my slight contribution to the translation of Wanyueci poetry. This thesis is altogether composed of six chapters:Chapter one is a general introduction, mainly divided into four sections:the significance, research objective, data collection and methodology of the thesis, and also the thesis structure; Chapter two is on literature review, mainly about the previous studies on image-G actualization theory and an overview of the previous studies on the translation of Wanyueci poetry; Chapter three deals specifically with the theoretical framework of this thesis-the theory of image-G actualization, including several main concepts and its application in literary translation, which makes the understanding of the following parts much easier; Chapter four first gives a brief introduction of Wanyueci poetry in terms of its definition, theme, characteristics and representatives. Then it concentrates on explaining why the translation of Wanyueci poetry can be regarded as a process of image-G actualization; Chapter five probes into the representation of image-G actualization in the translation of Wanyueci poetry concerning linguistic actualization and mental actualization, of which mental realization serves as a basis for linguistic realization. During the process of translation, the image-G formed in the translator’s mind will place certain restriction on linguistic choice, syntactical coherence and textual coherence; The last chapter presents the conclusion of this thesis concerning limitations and contributions of this thesis and provides advice for further study on the translation of Wanyueci poetry.Image-G actualization in Wanyueci translation not only requires the equivalence of lexical choice and syntactic structure, but also asks for textual coherence which is the most important among these three aspects. Though the theory of image-G actualization provides a novel perspective for poetry translation and study, it still needs further research and exploration.
