Abstract/Summary:
This paper deals with a tentative study of English transfer of ideorealm in classical Chinese poetry on the basis of the theory of image-G actualization. The purpose is to test the usability of the theory to the studies of ideorealm reproduction, and fill in a gap in the previous studies in this field. The theory of image-G actualization is proposed by Professor Jiang Qiuxia in her book Aesthetic Progression in Literary Translation: Image-G Actualization. The main points include: (1) image-gestalt is an image in the gestalt sense, which is a universal property existing in a 1iterary text; (2) literary translation involves a process of aesthetic image-G actualization; (3) the internal structure of any image-G is a kind of scenes-and-frames integration; (4) aesthetically, successful literary translation resides in successful image-G actualization; {5) an image-based literary translation model is as such: Phase I: source text comprehension --- a mental actualization of image-G; Phase II: target text creation --- a verbal actualization of image-G.The reproduction of ideorealm in the translation of classical Chinese poetry is a very significant yet rather difficult subject to be explored. The difficulties mainly arise from the complexity of the connotations of ideorealm. Therefore, the present thesis firstly makes a tentative exploration into the concept of ideorealm, and points out that ideorealm consists in the totality of the artistic imagery characterized by a fusion of feelings with scenes plus the imagined images it triggers. The essence of ideorealm creation lies not simply in a fusion of feelings with scenes, but more in creating"images beyond images", which can provide readers with a vast imaginary sphere. Therefore, ideorealm is actually completed by both the author and the reader. The reader's subjectivity is fully manifested in the process of ideorealm creation. And then, after an analysis of the affinity between image-G and ideorealm from the aspects of structure and aesthetic constitutes, the present thesis points out that the theory of image-G actualization, as a theory of literary translation, is supposed to be useful to ideorealm reproduction.Thirdly, based on the model of image-G actualization proposed by Professor Jiang Qiuxia, the author of this thesis tentatively proposes a model of ideorealm reproduction as to provide some guidence for this abstract concept.Fourthly, the present thesis makes a detailed analysis about subjective creativity of the translator-reader in the process of ideorealm reproduction. To reproduce ideorealm is in essence a re-creative art. The translator's subjective creativity in the process of ideorealm reproduction is mainly manifested in the following two aspects: on the one hand, the translator mentally actualizes the overall aesthetic images of the original ideorealm; on the other hand, he makes full use of his artistic expressing power to verbally actualize the original ideorealm in the target language. At last, this thesis makes studies on the reproduction of ideorealm of classical Chinese poetry in the light of the model of ideorealm reproduction and translators'subjective role by analyzing and criticizing three examples.Ideorealm reproduction is worth studying, and the theory of image-G actualization is useful to the study of it. First, it is useful to translation criticism; secondly, it is enlightening for translators and the study of translators as well.
