| This paper is based on Harold Bloom’s The Anxiety of Influence and Western Canon. In this paper, we are trying to connect Bloom’s poetics of effects in his early years with his viewpoint of the classics in his later years, and to make a contrast of them, In addition,we are trying to analyse his viewpoint of the classics and describes the main contents of it. By researching Bloom’s point of view, we are trying to reflect the current academic school’s playful and deconstructive tendencies towards classics. Another purpose of this paper is to reflect China’s current academic atmosphere.This paper contains an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The introduction describes the domestic research status of Bloom and the innovation and significance of this paper. The first chapter describes the four stages of Bloom’s academic career. Through the analysis of Bloom’s academic career, we can find that in Bloom’s thought, the pursuit of the romanticism, the human spirit and the aesthetic value has been permeated. The second chapter briefly describes the base of Bloom’s viewpoint of the classics. First we are trying to analyse why Bloom choose "canon" instead of another words, and then we are trying to analyse the three bases of Bloom’s viewpoint of the classics:the dissatisfaction with the excessive emphasis on ideology of the school of resentment, the admiration of the human spirit and the value of the classics. The third chapter describes the main contents of Bloom’s viewpoint of the classics. The four basic characteristics of the classics, from his point of view, are:strangeness, universality, competitiveness, anxiety. Meanwhile, we are trying to briefly describes Bloom’s principle view towards classics reading. The fourth chapter discusses the relationship between anxiety and classics. We are trying to analyse through three perspectives:traditional poetics perspective, psychology perspective, intertextuality perspective, so as to better understand Bloom’s viewpoint of the classics.Finally, we believe that whether the ideological interpretation of the currently popular academic schools, or Bloom’s aesthetic interpretation of the classics, are both ways of interpretation, and should be treated equally. At the same time, Bloom’s viewpoint of the classics, by emphasizing the classics’ aesthetic value and its guidance for the human beings, Is of importance to correct the current irritability atmosphere of academic research.We can go further only by adhering to the treasure of the tradition. |
