Zhao Mengjian, who has been known for his paintings, has long been researched by people. Ho wever, most research mainly focuses on his paintings, not on his poems. This thesis, based on the res earch on Zhao’s paintings as well as the research on his poems, will show readers a more colorful po rtrait of Mr. Zhao. First, the author will show us an image of Mr. Zhao, from the aspect of his clan id entity and the aspect of Song’s traditional culture, through the analysis of his life experience and his unique conception of life. In the second part, Zhao’s famous poems will be studied and analyzed so a s to summarize the characteristics of these poems. The author will also reveal the feelings and the art istic features behind Zhao’s poems. In the third part, an analysis will be made on Zhao’s Chinese ink paintings. Through the analysis of Zhao’s typical works, the author will summarize his painting char acteristics, telling readers the fact that Mr. Zhao is an excellent inheritor of literati painting style. In h is paintings, he gave up the stereotyped form of literati painting but put some exquisite painting tech niques into his Chinese ink works. Thus, he made his paintings become the typical works of shape a nd meanings. In the fourth part, the author will analyze the common characteristics of Zhao’s paintin gs and poems, trying to discover the most important artistic features of the consistency between paint ings and poems. This part is the key part of this thesis. It is the core of Zhao’s creation. At last, some critiques on Mr. Zhao will be given. The author will make a summary about Zhao’s historical status as well as his effect in history.
