He C-E Translation Of Fuzzy Words From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle

Fuzziness is a sort of objective attribute of natural language. In a general sense, it refers to the language phenomenon of indeterminacy without a clear boundary. Fuzziness has evoked the attention and interest of linguistic research. The fuzziness of language has long been favored by authors ever since the ancient time and it abounds in literary work like Tang Poems (TP).The theoretical foundation of the thesis is the Cooperative Principle (CP) put forward by H.P.Grice. The subject of this case study is fuzzy words in300Tang Poems and C-E translation. Fuzzy words in TP can be used to abide by the CP (to facilitate the communication) or to violate it (to generate implicature or achieve poetic effect). This thesis focuses on fuzzy words in Tang poems in the violation of the cooperative principle and the translation of these words into English.In this thesis, the violation of each maxim is discussed and examples are analyzed, by which, the author finds out that the violation of the CP allows poets to hide the meaning. Meanwhile, these fuzzy words also serve as rhetoric devices such as hyperbole, antithesis, metaphor and so on, add fuzzy beauty to poems, enhance the aesthetic and artistic value. By analyzing and comparing different versions, the author finds out that in dealing with fuzziness, translators usually apply three strategies:from fuzziness to fuzziness, from fuzziness to precision and the omission of fuzziness. The strategy applied reflects the translator’s understanding and style and may exert certain influence on the quality of his rendering.CP helps us better understand the fuzzy words in poems and evaluate the translation. As Tang poetry is the treasure of Chinese culture and its C-E translation is of increasing importance, the author holds that this area is well worth more discussions in the future.
